Selling an advertising package is good. Having an advertiser return and purchase it again is even better. Automatic Renewals in WaypointAds are designed to make that continuing relationship easier while ensuring that the advertiser remains in control of whether a package renews automatically. Administrators decide which advertising packages are renewable, can provide incentives for advertisers who renew, and can determine which packages are eligible for automatic renewal. The advertiser, however, must explicitly agree to automatic renewal when purchasing an eligible package.

### Understanding Renewable Packages

Before an advertising package can use Automatic Renewals, the Administrator must first make it a Renewable Package. This tells WaypointAds that the package is not necessarily intended to be a one-time purchase and may be renewed when its current term comes to an end.

This distinction is useful because not every advertising package should necessarily be renewable. An Administrator might create a special introductory offer, seasonal promotion or limited advertising package that is intended to be purchased only under particular circumstances. Other packages may form part of the site's regular advertising program and be suitable for advertisers who wish to continue using them over an extended period.

![The Renewals Options in the Administrator's Panel in WaypointAds](https://waypointads.com/images/production/tutorial/renewals-admin.webp "Offering an incentive to continue advertising is beneficial to the Customer and the Administrator.")

The Renewable Package setting gives the Administrator control over that distinction rather than assuming that every package sold through WaypointAds should be available indefinitely.

### Encouraging Advertisers to Renew

WaypointAds also allows the Administrator to provide incentives specifically for renewing advertisers. When Renewable Package is enabled, the package can include a Renewal Discount, Renewal Bonus Credits, or both.

A Renewal Discount reduces the price applicable to the renewal. For example, an Administrator could offer a package at its normal introductory or initial price and provide a 10 percent discount when the advertiser renews. This can encourage established advertisers to continue their campaigns while rewarding them for maintaining their advertising relationship with the site.

Renewal Bonus Credits provide another way of rewarding continuing advertisers. Rather than—or in addition to—reducing the renewal price, the Administrator can add extra Advertising Credits to the advertiser's Wallet when the package is renewed. A package might, for example, provide 10,000 additional Advertising Credits at renewal. This gives the advertiser additional spending power without requiring the Administrator to change the normal advertising rates attached to Zones.

Using the two options together allows an Administrator to create a particularly attractive renewal offer. An advertiser could receive both a percentage discount and additional Advertising Credits simply by continuing with the package.

### Making a Package Eligible for Automatic Renewal

A renewable package does not automatically become an automatically renewing package. These are deliberately separate settings within WaypointAds.

After enabling Renewable Package, the Administrator can select Eligible for automatic renewal. This makes the automatic-renewal option available when an advertiser purchases the package.

Importantly, enabling this setting does not automatically enroll every purchaser in automatic renewal. It merely allows the advertiser to choose automatic renewal when making the purchase.

This distinction gives the Administrator control over which packages may be automatically renewed without taking the renewal decision away from the customer.

### Advertiser Consent Is Required

WaypointAds requires the advertiser's explicit consent before an eligible package can be enrolled in automatic renewal. The Administrator cannot simply mark a package as automatically renewable and thereby place every advertiser purchasing it into an automatic-renewal arrangement.

This is an important part of the WaypointAds renewal system. Advertising customers should know when they are entering an arrangement that may continue beyond the original term, particularly when real-money payments and Advertising Credits are involved. The automatic-renewal option is therefore presented as a choice associated with the purchase rather than as a hidden consequence of buying the package.

An Administrator can make automatic renewal available. The advertiser decides whether to use it.

### Renewable Does Not Mean Automatic

It is worth emphasizing the difference between these two settings because they serve different purposes.

A Renewable Package may be purchased again when its term expires. The advertiser can return and renew it manually, and any configured renewal incentives can apply.

An Automatic-Renewal Eligible Package goes one step further by allowing an advertiser who has explicitly opted in to have the renewal process handled automatically when the appropriate renewal point is reached.

This means an Administrator can offer renewable packages without offering automatic renewal at all. It also means that advertisers who prefer to make a fresh decision at the end of each term can continue to do so.

### Setting a Renewal Discount

The Renewal Discount field accepts the percentage discount the Administrator wishes to provide when the package is renewed.

For example, entering 10.00% creates a 10 percent renewal discount. The original package can therefore retain its normal published price while returning advertisers receive the discounted renewal terms.

This approach is preferable to permanently lowering the package price simply to encourage repeat business. New advertisers can continue purchasing the package under its standard terms, while established customers receive a specific benefit for renewing.

The Administrator remains responsible for deciding whether a renewal discount is appropriate and how generous it should be. A modest discount may be sufficient for an established advertising package, while a more aggressive renewal incentive might be useful when developing a new advertising program or encouraging longer relationships with advertisers.

### Adding Renewal Bonus Credits

Renewal Bonus Credits provide an incentive without necessarily reducing the monetary value of the package itself.

If the Administrator enters 10,000 Renewal Bonus Credits, those additional Advertising Credits become part of the renewal benefit. Because Advertising Credits are subsequently consumed according to the advertiser's Campaign activity and contracted Zone rates, bonus credits effectively allow the advertiser to purchase additional advertising from the site.

This can be particularly useful where the Administrator wants to reward loyalty while maintaining the published monetary price of an advertising package.

Renewal discounts and bonus credits are independent options. An Administrator can offer a discount without bonus credits, bonus credits without a discount, both together, or neither.

### Renewal Terms and Existing Advertising

One of the important principles behind WaypointAds billing is that changes made by an Administrator should not unexpectedly rewrite the advertising agreement already being used by an existing Campaign.

Zone prices may change over time as the Administrator develops the site's advertising program. Existing Campaigns retain the pricing terms under which they were established, while new advertising arrangements can use the current pricing available at that time.

This allows an Administrator to adjust the value of advertising inventory without unexpectedly changing what an advertiser agreed to pay for advertising already underway.

### Purchase Approval and Renewals

WaypointAds also provides a Purchase requires administrator approval setting for packages. This is separate from whether the package is renewable or eligible for automatic renewal.

The purpose of purchase approval is to give the Administrator additional control over access to a package. This may be useful for premium placements, specialized advertising arrangements or packages where the Administrator wants to review the advertiser before allowing the purchase to proceed.

Administrators should therefore think of purchase approval, renewability and automatic-renewal eligibility as separate controls. Each addresses a different part of the advertiser relationship rather than being different names for the same setting.

### Automatic Renewals and Advertising Credits

Advertising Credits remain central to the WaypointAds billing system. Purchasing or renewing a package provides the advertiser with the Advertising Credits associated with that package and any applicable renewal bonus.

Those credits are then consumed by advertising activity according to the rates agreed for the Campaign and its Zones. A Zone may, for example, charge according to clicks or blocks of impressions. The advertiser's Wallet records the resulting transactions so that advertising expenditure can be followed separately from the package purchase itself.

This distinction is important. Renewing a package and spending Advertising Credits are not the same transaction. The package supplies the advertising resources; Campaign activity subsequently consumes those resources.

### What About Advertising That Should Not Be Charged?

Not every advertiser using WaypointAds necessarily needs to participate in the billing system.

An Administrator may want to operate house advertising, promote another part of the website, provide complimentary advertising to a charity or partner, or run other Campaigns where charging Advertising Credits would serve no purpose. WaypointAds therefore allows individual Advertisers to be given an Unbilled Billing Status from the Administrator's Advertiser Control Screen.

![Unbillable Setting in the Administrator's panel in WaypointAds](https://waypointads.com/images/production/tutorial/billing-status-admin.webp "Setting the Advertiser to Unbilled prevents the WaypointAds billing system from charging the Advertiser.")

An Unbilled advertiser can continue using normal Campaigns, Creatives and Zones. WaypointAds still records Campaign impressions and clicks so the Administrator can measure performance, but advertising delivery does not deduct Advertising Credits or create spending entries in the Wallet Ledger.

This is considerably cleaner than creating artificial free packages or filling a Wallet with credits that were never intended to represent a real advertising purchase. If the advertiser should later return to ordinary paid advertising, the Administrator can change the Billing Status back to Standard — Normal billing applies.

### Building Long-Term Advertising Relationships

Automatic Renewals are ultimately about removing unnecessary friction from an established advertising relationship. An advertiser who is satisfied with a site's performance should not have to reconstruct the same purchasing decision every time an advertising term comes to an end.

At the same time, convenience should not come at the expense of control. WaypointAds therefore separates the Administrator's decision to make a package renewable from the advertiser's decision to participate in automatic renewal. Renewal discounts and bonus Advertising Credits can reward continuing customers, while explicit consent ensures that automatic renewal remains a choice.

For the Administrator, that creates the opportunity to turn occasional advertising purchases into longer-lasting customer relationships. For the advertiser, it provides an easier way to keep successful advertising running while retaining control over the decision to renew.

And that is really the purpose of Automatic Renewals in WaypointAds: keep successful advertising relationships moving forward without making either side fight the system to do it.
