What Is a Competitive Group?
A Competitive Group is a collection of advertisers that should not have their advertisements displayed together.
For example, two local car dealerships, competing restaurants, or rival insurance companies may not wish to have their advertisements appearing alongside one another on the same page.
Competitive Groups allow WaypointAds to manage these situations automatically.
Why Use Competitive Groups?
Advertisers invest in promoting their business because they want visitors' attention.
Displaying advertisements from direct competitors together may reduce the effectiveness of both advertisements and may not reflect the advertising agreements you have with your clients.
Competitive Groups help protect those relationships by ensuring that competing advertisements remain appropriately separated.
How Competitive Groups Work
Administrators create one or more Competitive Groups and assign the relevant Advertisers to them.
When advertisements are displayed, WaypointAds checks the Competitive Group assignments before selecting which advertisements may appear together.
If displaying one advertisement would conflict with another already selected for the page, WaypointAds simply chooses a suitable alternative whenever one is available.
This process happens automatically without requiring any additional work from the administrator.
When Should They Be Used?
Competitive Groups are particularly useful for websites advertising businesses within the same industry, including:
- Restaurants
- Real estate agencies
- Car dealerships
- Insurance companies
- Banks and financial services
- Legal firms
- Medical practices
- Retail businesses
Any situation where competing businesses prefer not to advertise alongside one another may benefit from Competitive Groups.
Benefits of Competitive Groups
Competitive Groups provide several important advantages:
- Help protect advertiser relationships.
- Reduce conflicts between competing businesses.
- Improve the professionalism of your advertising program.
- Allow administrators to manage competition automatically.
- Increase confidence in your advertising policies.
For websites with many advertisers, Competitive Groups remove the need to manage these situations manually.
Best Practices
We recommend:
- Create Competitive Groups only where genuine competition exists.
- Keep group membership up to date.
- Explain your advertising policy to advertisers where appropriate.
- Review Competitive Groups periodically as new advertisers join your website.
- Keep your Competitive Groups simple and easy to manage.
Well-organized Competitive Groups help ensure your advertising system remains fair, consistent, and professional.
Looking Ahead
Competitive Groups quietly work in the background, allowing administrators to focus on managing advertising rather than monitoring which advertisements appear together.
By automatically respecting competitive relationships, WaypointAds helps deliver a better experience for both website owners and their advertisers.
